Assault Landing Zone (ALZ) Shoulder Improvements
Duke Field, Eglin Air Force Base, Florida
Project description is as follows:
- Design-build project included 6,500 feet of 10-foot-wide asphalt shoulders added to the existing Assault Landing Zone (ALZ) runway at Duke Field, Eglin AFB, Florida.
- Engineers utilized the software package Pavement-Transportation Computer Assisted Structural Engineering (PCASE) to accomplish the pavement section design in order to meet operational requirements of the ALZ.
- Through a creative approach, AVCON, INC. engineers worked with the permitting authority, Northwest Florida Water Management District (NWFWMD), and addressed the permitting requirements for this safety improvement project.
- This project was the first runway shoulder improvement project in the District to be exempt under this section of the Florida Administrative Code. The results of this effort reduced the overall footprint of the project by being able to utilize existing swales for storm water collection.
