Aberdeen Proving Grounds and Upgrades
Weide Army Airfield, Maryland
Project description is as follows:
- This $1.7-million design-build project was required to bring the heliport’s lighting, signage and markings into full UFC compliance. The existing airfield lights had not been operational for over three years and the heliport markings were not in compliance with the applicable UFC’s.
- AVCON provided full design and construction phase services for this project. The entirely new airfield lighting system included new electric service, vault, regulators, generator, airfield lighting control system, threshold, taxiway and runway lights, and signage.
- Lighting control was provided in the lighting vault and in the control room, along with aircraft radio remote capability. Runway and taxiway markings not in compliance with the UFC’s were removed and new markings were painted as required.
- A CHAPI was also installed for an existing helipad, which was also controlled by the lighting control system. The result of this project is a heliport with new markings and a new airfield lighting system vastly improving the safety for pilots and their aircraft.
