AVCON Employees Help Foster the Spirit of Engineering in Central Florida Elementary Schools

AVCON Partners with the Florida Engineering Society (FES) of Central Florida to Participate in Teach-Ins at Local Elementary Schools

Over the past few months, AVCON employees put their teaching skills to the test and presented engineering concepts to classes of 4th and 5th graders at various Central Florida Elementary Schools. Clint Pletzer, PE, who is the Civil Design Manager, Transportation at AVCON and the FES Central Florida President for the 2022-2023 year, helped to organize some of our Orlando engineers interested in sharing their knowledge and helping shape tomorrow’s generation of (possible) engineers.

Some of the topics our employees covered ranged from traffic safety to fundamentals of mechanics, to structures and design. Structural Engineer, Analiese Majetich, EI, even brought wooden sticks and gumdrops to give the students a hands-on approach to building. She taught students that even the most complex structures are made up of simple shapes, like X’s and triangles. Analiese noted “Engaging with those students gave me hope for our future as they are a bright bunch! It also reminded me how grateful I am for all the people that dedicated their time to educate and mentor me when I was younger. And now I am excited that I can do the same for this next generation.”.

Educating students in elementary school about basic STEM concepts can help greatly increase their interest in careers in these fields later in life. AVCON employees take pride in fostering education and excitement for engineering and beyond!
